さおり織とは、1968年に城みさをさん（1913-2018）という大阪の主婦が考えた織物。
基本はすべて自己表現であり、手本がなく、自分の想い通りに織る自由な手織りです。
Saori weaving was conceived in 1968 by an Osaka housewife named Misao Shiro (1913-2018). The basis is all about self-expression; there are no models, and the weaver is free to weave as he or she wishes.

港区のNPOエブリィへさをり織の見学に行ってきました。ここでは、月に2回、2時間だけの機織りに、織り手である女性が通っています。ゆったりとした時間の中で、さをり織についてのお話を聞きながら、機織りの工程を見せていただきました。

I went to NPO Every in Minato-ku to visit Sasori weaving. Here, women weavers attend a weaving session twice a month for two hours only. In a relaxed atmosphere, we listened to a story about Sasori weaving and were shown the weaving process.

たくさんある糸から、イメージした色を選びます。From the many threads available, choose the color you have in mind.
まずは縦糸を張る作業から。The first step is to stretch the warp threads.
張られた縦糸に、横糸をパタン、パタンと通していきます。The weft threads are threaded onto the warp threads.

そうして世界にひとつだけの織物ができあがります。丁寧に織られたさをり織のスカーフから、ポーチを作りました。
