15年ぶりにタイ・バンコクに行ってきました。タイの生地といえば、タイシルクのジム・トンプソンが有名。お土産の定番です。

ジム・トンプソンは1906年生まれのアメリカ人。NYで建築家として働き、34歳で米陸軍に入り、第2次世界大戦後に赴任先のタイに永住。タイシルクの美しさに魅せられ、その普及に没頭。デザイナーとして、染織家として、実業家として才能に恵まれ、タイシルクの名を世界に広めました。

今回の旅では、彼が住んでいたジム・トンプソンハウスを訪れました。サイアムという渋谷や銀座を足したような街のど真ん中に、突然美しい家と庭園が、、、ジム・トンプソンハウスはタイの建築様式を取り入れたチーク材の古い家を6軒あつめて作られたもの。東南アジアの熱帯を感じさせる建築に、洗練されたインテリアと骨董品。まさに私の理想の家！

For the first time in 15 years, I visited Bangkok, Thailand. Speaking of Thai fabrics, Jim Thompson of Thai silk is famous. It is a standard souvenir.
Jim Thompson, an American born in 1906, worked as an architect in New York, joined the U.S. Army at the age of 34, and permanently lived in Thailand, where he was assigned after World War II. He was fascinated by the beauty of Thai silk and immersed himself in its promotion. He was a talented designer, dyer, and businessman, and spread the name of Thai silk throughout the world.
On this trip, we visited Jim Thompson House, where he lived. In the middle of Siam, a town that looks like a combination of Shibuya and Ginza, there suddenly appeared a beautiful house and garden. The architecture evokes the tropics of Southeast Asia, with sophisticated interiors and antiques. It is my ideal house!

見学記念に案内冊子。中にはレストランもあって、オススメだそうですよ。私はマンゴジュース1杯いただいて、200バーツ。このあとトゥクトゥクのおじさんに７バーツの水をおごってもらって相場を知る。ここはタイの中でも別世界。
Information booklet to commemorate your visit. There is a restaurant inside, recommended. I drank a 200 baht mango juice. After that, a tuk-tuk man bought me a 7 baht bottle of water to know the market price.

バンコクにはジム・トンプソン店舗がいくつかあり、本店ではシルクを使ったバックやスカーフだけでなく、インテリアファブリックや生地も販売していました。生地はだいたい1500バーツ/ M！
お店も上品で洗練されており、高級デパート〜ハイブランド価格だけど素敵！ベットリネンなどはため息ものです。

There are several Jim Thompson stores in Bangkok, and the main store sold interior fabrics and fabrics as well as bags and scarves made of silk. Fabrics cost roughly 1500 baht/m!
The stores are elegant and sophisticated, and the prices are high-end department store to high-brand prices, but nice! The bed linens are breathtaking.
